What does it mean to see differently?
The Journal debuts this summer. Share your email and never miss an issue.
One of the greatest mysteries of being human is the fact that knowing is not enough.
Being told to change, knowing you SHOULD change, and even knowing WHY you should change, doesn’t make it happen.
And to make it worse, you are acutely aware that being able to write a book about the the thing you’re NOT doing WILL NOT make you actually do the thing.
How many times have you gone “Yeah, yeah, I know I should…”
… avoid that toxic ex…. exercise more and eat less processed food… stop procrastinating (oh the irony!)… and on and on…
…but you still don’t do the thing you know you should do?
And it’s everywhere. Half the internet is built around asking internet strangers for advice when the asker already knows the answer. And even doctors struggle to get patients to take daily lifesaving medicine, which the patients know they should take!
Humans are wild.
But then! There are the times you have some sort of experience. Some big a-ha moment, totally unplanned and unrelated to your thing.
And that thing you knew you were supposed to do, but never actually did, suddenly makes sense in a new way.
And you start doing it. And your entire life shifts.
That’s what The Journal is about.
Not talking about what or how to change, but the experience of change.
The feeling of those a-ha moments, and everything that got you to that point.
The sensation of the shift.
The new possibilities that are suddenly open to you.
The Journal is dedicated the experience of change, exploration of perspective, and the unveiling of everything that goes on beneath the surface.
Sounds meaty, right? So how do we do it?
We put out calls to all kinds of up-and-coming creatives, writers, artists, dancers, for content that embodies the experience of change, perspective and “what’s really going on here”.
The call is intentionally broad so these wonderful artists can do what they do best. The only real guidance is “show don’t tell”. And we offer payment for every submission accepted, because artists deserve to be paid fairly for their work.
Then our curators use their special way of seeing to create an experience that will blow your mind.
Like everything here, this is new. And exciting. And there will be growing pains.
But I promise:
You’ll look forward to it like a kid waiting for cake after dinner. Except with higher nutritional value and all of the taste.
It’ll be more satisfying than a popsicle on a hot summer day.
It’ll make you think harder than a graduate student during finals - mostly in a good way, and without the sleep deprivation.
I think you’ll like it.
So join the list to receive our first issue and be the first to know when Submissions reopen this summer!
Submissions for all types of art, writing, and media are now open through Submittable.
